Hanna And Her Flowers

I was inspired to paint this portrait one day as I was walking past my local florist shop as Hanna the florist was sorting out a fresh delivery of flowers.

Hanna is such a lovley girl, and I wanted to capture that moment and interpret it in my own way on canvas.

Paul

"Paul" - Oil on canvas

1000mm x 500mm

I painted this portrait of Paul Hutchinson for the Wai Portrait Awards

I first met Taranaki artist Paul Hutchinson when buying one of his exquisite miniature paintings on-line about four years ago. I have always had great admiration for the realist painterly style of his art, and I soon found him to be very helpful, generous and encouraging to me as a fellow artist, which is why I asked him to be my subject for the Wai Art Portrait Awards.

I chose this up-close and personal composition to accentuate his aesthetically interesting face which I feel reflects his long personal struggle as an artist and a life well lived. I am grateful to Paul for agreeing to be the subject of my portrait, and I thank him for his generosity and trust.

National Drawing Award Exhibition

Girl with a Greenstone EarringI drew this portrait "Girl with a Greenstone Earring" as my own New Zealand 21st century interpretation of Johannes Vermeer's painting "Girl with a Pearl Earring" (circa 1665)

I wanted to inspire the same questions that I wondered about when I first saw Vermeer's work, ie:  What is she thinking as she stares out at us? Is her enigmatic expression innocent or knowing? Wistful or serene? Vulnerable or seductive?

This portrait was drawn using pencil, charcoal and pen.

Fun with resin
Monday, 29 September 2008 20:36

Fun with resinI have just finished this abstract painting called "Connections", it is finished with two layers of resin giving it a very highly polished glassy look which adds to the effect of looking through patterned glass.

I have only recently begun experimenting with resin, and must say that I do love it's glossy finish. Usually resin can only be used with acrylics, but I have found that it also works perfectly well with alkyd oil paint which is my medium of choice.

I was really stoked when the first person to see the painting bought it! Smile

I was quite chuffed that Amie chose to submit my website into the award for "Open Source Use in Business".

St Philips Exhibition
Sunday, 17 August 2008 22:20

St PhilipsLast Friday I went to the St Philips Sale Of Fine Art opening function. The evening was a lot of fun, and there were many lovely and interesting paintings to look at; and also it is always enjoyable chatting with the other artists. Here I am pictured with my good friend, artist Louise Stericker in front of my painting Hope Floats. Considering the current state of the economy I was pleased to sell one out of the three artworks I entered into the exhibition. Smile

The exhibition ran for three days and finished this afternoon.

Serenity
Thursday, 14 August 2008 23:37
SerenityI painted this painting as a sort of sister painting to "Seraphim" (see below) they are both the same size and colour scheme, and each one faces toward the other so the works complimented each other. I was originally going to exhibit them both at the OSFA Exhibition but then I decided to swap this one for a painting by Oamaru artist Natasha Shackleton. Her painting is the same size as this, it is one of her Moonlight Bay series which is funky and vibrant. I am very pleased with my swap! I have decided to collect a group of paintings of this same size to hang together on my wall. I chose the name "Serenity" for this one because her face is calm and peaceful and the word has the same angelic feel as Seraphim. In a way I feel quite sad now that they were separated as they would have probably suited being sold as a pair.

Concept with Arabesque

"Concept with Arabesque"
390 x 820 mm - Acrylic on canvas

I have been feeling the urge to break away from my natural representational style and experiment with forms of abstraction.
The work began without preconception and remained open to change as the layers of paint transformed and progressed, but I found it difficult to leave behind my love of pattern and form...(old habits are hard to break)...and I found myself applying an arabesque style scroll motif across the top of it, so it's now a sort of hybrid post-modern abstract ;-)
